BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

The 2004 Bahrain Grand Prix marked the first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship to be held in Middle East. Pioneers in the sport, the Bahraini passion for racing has continued to grow and 2018’s race is scheduled to take place from April 6 -8. The race is traditionally the first night race of the season held out under the Sakhir desert stars. Meanwhile off the track, expect a wide variety of entertainment at the Formula 1 Village, the deserts very own oasis.

Visitors can team a race weekend with a journey into Bahrain’s rich history and culture. Visit Qal'at al-Bahrain, a 5000 year old fort and one of the kingdom’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. Follow this by wandering through one of the traditional souqs, breathing in the aroma of spices and haggling over souvenirs, before heading to Block 338, a trendy quarter filled with restaurants, cafes and art galleries. The adventurous can try their hand at pearl diving. Historically Bahrain was the centre of the world’s pearl trade with Bahraini pearls considered the best in the world. Today you can explore the treasures in Bahrain’s turquoise waters for yourself - any pearls you do find are yours to keep forever.

  • Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands. The largest, on which many of us live, is 55km long by 18km wide and areas such as Sitra and Muharraq are actually separate islands.
  • The name ‘Bahrain’ means two seas in Arabic, which is attributed to the sweet water springs and salty water in the seas that surrounds the island country
  • There is a famous tree called ‘Tree of Life’, which is 400 years old and stands alone in the desert of Bahrain
  • Bahrain is the capital of the ancient Dilmun civilisation and thought by some to be the fabled Garden of Eden
  • Bahrain was once the capital of the world pearl trade, and Jacques Cartier used to travel here in search of the world’s most perfect pearls
  • The Bahrain Pearling Trail is one of the Kingdom’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is a 3.5 km trail located in the island of Muharraq, that was used by pearl divers during much of Bahrain’s history
