Arizona - The Adventurer's Playground
Each month we will share news and tips on some of Arizona's most popular attractions or experiences, ensuring you are ready to sell the destination to your clients.
This month we are focusing on all things adventure!
Endless adventure awaits you in Arizona: your ideal place to get away in the great outdoors. Hike deep down into the Grand Canyon, mountain bike through the beautiful red rocks of Sedona or take to the slopes for a spot of skiing. Arizona really does offer an endless adventure.
Hike the Grand Canyon
One of the world's vast and beautiful wonders, the Grand Canyon is a must-see when visiting Arizona. The walls descend more than a mile to the canyon floor and run 277 miles from end to end. Visitors flock to Grand Canyon National Park, which can be entered through the town of Tusayan, making it one of the country's top most-visited national parks - and for good reason! Explore a hiking paradise with over 1,500 types of plants and 300 bird species to spy. Enjoy this rugged expanse on trails like Bright Angel and South Kaibab and please always keep in mind that it takes twice as long to come back up as it does to go down! Check the hiking tips here.
For a leisurely day trip to the canyon, schedule a train ride on the Grand Canyon Railway - surely one of the most unique ways to journey to the Grand Canyon, perfect for families, multi-generational travel or those simply looking for something a bit different!
Mountain bike on the Red Rocks of Sedona
Expand your mind and sense of adventure in Sedona! For decades, the area has inspired artists and photographers through its celebrated vortexes of spiritual energy. Now, visitors can discover the winding trails through the majestic, colorful sandstone-walled canyons - perfect for hiking and more. Check out the wealth of trails ranging from leisurely jaunts to long, challenging backpacking treks. Cycling enthusiasts can rent bicycles in town to challenge themselves on the sandstone slick rock. Try one or all of the 13 best bike rides in Sedona (before finishing with a beer from the award-winning Oak Creek Brewing!). More than a dozen tour companies in the area are also available to help visitors explore Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon by trolley, jeep, horseback, hot-air balloon, and helicopter.
For getting quite literally off the beaten track, check out 'Sedona's Secret 7', a guide to hidden trails, activities and locations in Sedona, encouraging visitors to disperse around the area in a more sustainable way. For the Secret Seven biking trails, click here.
Ski the southernmost ski slope in the U.S. - Mt. Lemmon
Did you know you can ski in Arizona in the winter?! Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, located in the Santa Catalina Mountains, is the southernmost ski resort in the USA. Located an hour outside of Tucson, visitors can golf and ski all in the same day! Other ski areas in the state include Arizona Snowbowl, atop Mt. Humphreys, Arizona's highest peak, in Flagstaff. The chairlift sweeps visitors up 11,500-foot to Agassiz Peak, and the resort's 2,300-foot vertical drop and 32 trails of varied difficulty provide lots of ski options. Sunrise Ski Resort in North Central Arizona's White Mountains is part of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and reaches more than 11,000 feet in elevation. In addition to downhill skiing, the tribe offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, guided snowmobiling, ice fishing, and sleigh rides.
Jet ski under London Bridge
You read that right! Dubbed the "Personal Watercraft Capital of the World", Lake Havasu City sits on the shores of the Colorado River and is one of the Southwest's premier locations for water sports. Its namesake lake is a 45-mile-long playground with miles of shoreline, sandy beaches, secluded coves and sunny skies acting as a magnet for boaters and jet skiers. It is also home to one of Arizona's most popular attractions, the London Bridge. Purchased in 1968, the bridge (formerly spanning London's River Thames) was disassembled and shipped to Arizona. The "world's largest antique" is now a focal point for visitor activity.
